Your opinion doesn’t count. Your thoughts do not matter. Your points of view are dismissed. Your feelings are unimportant. Excuses are made when your name comes up. There is a hush when your name is even brought up. You are, in fact, an embarrassment. And this is a good day because maybe today you were not publicly humiliated. Maybe today you did not lose your job. Maybe today you did not get served with divorce papers. Maybe today you did not get spit on, kicked, targeted or assaulted.
The world is a diverse place, indeed. As we all know, there are many countries that are run as a theocracy. Being a member or even a sympathizer or supporter of a non-state sanctioned religion can get you killed. Being an atheist in these areas requires you keep an extremely low profile, or more often, pretend to be one the religious. However, I am writing from the United States of America, and we are not (yet) a theocracy and those of us who are unbelievers should expect treatment equal to those who are members of the many religions in this country.
But that is not where I am going with today’s piece. Today, I am breaking it down a few levels. Today, I am targeting your family and your community. Your home, hearth and haven.
